Q: What is Alter?
A: Alter is a real-time interactive text adventure game. You receive messages from a stranded character and respond with binary choices that steer the story. The narrative unfolds across real time — some actions take minutes or hours — creating the feeling of a genuine ongoing conversation.
Q: Do I need an account to play?
A: No. Alter does not require you to create an account or provide any personal information. Simply download the app and start playing.
Q: Does the game require an internet connection?
A: No internet connection is required. The entire story runs locally on your device. All story progress is saved on your device and never sent to any server.
Q: Why does the game ask to send push notifications?
A: The story unfolds in real time — the character you're communicating with sometimes needs time to perform actions (minutes or hours). Push notifications alert you when it's your turn to respond again, so you don't have to keep the app open. You can still play without notifications, but you'll need to manually check back.
Q: My progress disappeared. What happened?
A: Story progress is stored locally on your device. If you deleted and reinstalled the app, your progress will have been reset. Uninstalling the app removes all saved data. There is currently no cloud backup for progress.
Q: Can I replay the story with different choices?
A: Yes. Once you reach an ending, you can start a new playthrough and explore different paths. The story has multiple branching outcomes, so different choices will lead to different endings.
Q: How many endings does the story have?
A: The story has multiple endings — some are survival outcomes and others result from critical mistakes. Every choice matters, so exploring different paths reveals new story content and consequences.
Q: The story seems stuck and nothing is happening. What do I do?
A: The game uses real-time delays between some messages. If you're waiting for a response, the character may be mid-action. Check your notification settings to make sure you'll be alerted when it's your turn. If you've been waiting longer than expected, try closing and reopening the app.
Q: The app crashed or is not responding. How do I fix it?
A: Try force-closing the app and reopening it. If the issue persists, restart your device. If you continue to experience crashes, please contact us with your device model and OS version so we can investigate.
Q: Is Alter suitable for children?
A: Alter is not directed at children under 13. The story contains survival themes and tension that may not be appropriate for young children. Parental discretion is advised.
Troubleshooting
Push Notifications Not Working
- Open your device Settings and confirm that notifications are enabled for Alter
- On iOS: Settings → Alter → Notifications → Allow Notifications
- On Android: Settings → Apps → Alter → Notifications → enable All Notifications
- Make sure your device is not in Do Not Disturb mode
Story Not Progressing
- Some story segments have real-time waiting periods — this is intentional
- Force-close and reopen the app to refresh the story state
- Restart your device if the issue persists
App Crashing or Freezing
- Ensure your OS is up to date (iOS 17+ / Android 8+)
- Force-close the app and relaunch it
- Restart your device
- Reinstall the app if the problem continues (note: this will reset your progress)
